2006 Ramsey Canyon Christmas Bird Count (CBC)
2006 Ramsey Canyon Christmas Bird Count Results
Once again we had another very successful RCCBC. We had 75
participants and counted 154 species of birds including a first ever
Allen’s Hummingbird. We also counted over 16,000 birds, which is
pretty high for us over the last few years.
The day started off pretty chilly for folks who went out owling, with
temperatures below freezing in most places, but after a pleasant
breakfast at the Lone Star Café, temperatures steadily warmed up into
the low to mid 50’s by mid-afternoon.
As usual, our 13 feeder watchers picked up several species no one else
saw. Our 15 field teams covered most of the river, the EOP, all of
the canyons and just about everything in between within our CBC
circle. Here is a breakdown of the unusual species (US) seen and the
high counts (HC) recorded: Wood Duck (US & HC (5)), American Wigeon
(HC (352)), Mexican race of the Mallard Duck (HC (117)), Blue-winged
Teal (US), Cinnamon Teal (HC (12)), Bufflehead (US), Common Merganser
(US), Wild Turkey (HC (45)), White-tailed Kite (US), Sharp-shinned
Hawk (HC (14)), Cooper’s Hawk (HC (23)), Harris Hawk (US), Sora (HC
(6)), Barn Owl (HC (9 – including 3 fledglings)), Broad-tailed
Hummingbird (US), Black-chinned Hummingbird (US & HC (2)), Anna’s
Hummingbird (HC (36)), Allen’s Hummingbird (US), Ladder-backed
Hummingbird (HC (73)), Eastern Phoebe (US), Ruby-crowned Kinglet (HC
(275)), Yellow-rumped (Myrtle) Warbler (HC (9)), Louisiana Waterthrush
(US & HC (2)), Wilson’s Warbler (US), Painted Redstart (HC
(4))Clay-colored Sparrow (US & HC (5)), Lawrence’s Goldfinch (US), &
Lesser Goldfinch (HC (557)).
We also had some missing birds or low counts: 0 Montezuma Quail, 45
Scaled Quail, 0 Blue-throated Hummingbird, 1 Brown Creeper, 1 Pygmy
Nuthatch, 1 Steller’s Jay, 1 Olive Warbler, & 0 Pine Siskin.
